Here's how to find thousands of audio books for free online

Having a free audio book in the car for when you run errands, on your phone when you're traveling, or on your computer to enjoy while you work, can keep you sane and add some fun and interest to your day.

These websites offer completely free audiobooks for you to download and listen to whenever you want. You won't find any samples here — at these websites, you'll be able to download complete audio books.

The free audio books below are all legal to download. They are either public domain or the websites have gotten permission from the author to offer the audio book for free. Most of the time you'll be downloading these books as files (or sometimes or files) that can play on your computer, , phone, or MP3 player.

Important: There are lots of websites aside from the ones below that offer free audio books that you can download through . However, you should know that while that method of sharing audio ebooks and other digital files (e.g., movies, software, music) may seem completely fine, it's normally illegal in most countries and is typically considered an unsafe way to share files since it's a common way to transmit .

LibriVox has a huge selection of free audio books that are recordings of volunteers who have read chapters from books that are in the public domain.

You can find a free audio book by searching by title, author, genre/subject, or language. You can also in the catalog, view only the most recent audio books, and as podcasts.

Once you reach a book's description page, you can read more about it and even listen to the chapters individually without having to download each of them. 

However, if you do want to download the whole audio book, every chapter included, you can do so in a file, directly from LibriVox. Some are also available through a and file.

LibriVox is also available for and devices so you can download audio books to your phone or tablet, or them on the go.

Audible has a 30-day free trial going which means that you can download any two audio books of your choice for free during that time.

Audible has a great selection of audio books and you'll be able to find just about any audiobook you are looking for, including best sellers and new releases.

After the 30 day trial, you can get one book each month for $14.95 /month, no matter the price of the book.

If your local library has a subscription to OverDrive () then this is a great place to find free audio book downloads of recent fiction and non-fiction books, including best-sellers.

You'll check out these audio books just like you would a library book and they'll be returned at the end of the loan period. You can even do it all from Libby, the mobile app for , , and .

Besides free audiobooks, OverDrive also has free ebooks, movies, and music.

Lit2Go is a unique free audio book website that organizes their audio books based on readability using the index. Don't worry if you aren't sure what that is — Lit2Go is a great place to download audio books even if you're not a teacher.

Each book can be downloaded by the chapter and includes popular classic titles like ​Aesop's Fables, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Anne of Green Gables, The Call of the Wild, Oliver Twist, Wuthering Heights, and many, many more.

You can like Fable, Gothic, Epic, Adventure, Informational, Horror, and Poetry, among others. The audio book downloads can also be found by  such as The Civil War and The Books of Oz.

For some of these audio books, you can also download a version of the text to follow along, in addition to a student activity worksheet. Others have the text on the book's download page.

The Internet Archive also has a ton of free audio book downloads that you can browse through by subject, keywords, or using the search box. There are around 15,000 results for audio books and poetry on this website.

My favorite way to find free audio books at Internet Archive is by sorting the books by view count to find the .

Popular audio books here include The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Jane Eyre, The Swiss Family Robinson, Moby Dick, The Art of War, and Dracula

Some are available in multiple formats so that you can download an audio book in the MP3 or format, for example.

 is another part of Internet Archive that has several dozen classic sci-fi audio books.

It's easy to use Loyal Books (previously called Books Should Be Free) to download free audio books. You can view the audio books by the language, the , and by genre like Children, Fiction, Fantasy, Mystery, and more than a dozen others.

You can listen to these books on the Loyal Books website, download MP3s of the chapters altogether at once in one ZIP file, download the whole audiobook in one M4B file for iPhones and iPods, stream from your or , and even get the audio book through an .

These are public domain books, so you might not see anything here that differs from the other public domain audio book websites we've already mentioned.

If you are looking for free audio books for kids, then Storynory should be your first stop. 

Every week, Storynory publishes a free audio book just for kids. The audio books here include original stories, fairy tales, classic stories, educational books, and some small stories for the very little ones.

Open Culture has several hundred fiction, non-fiction, and poetry audiobooks you can download for free. Just scroll down the alphabetized list to browse through everything they have to offer.

These audio book downloads are located on a variety of other websites, too, so some of them may be direct links to the MP3 while others might be streamed from its download page but not available for download.

Besides free audio books, Open Culture also has , online courses, , and ebooks.

Digitalbook.io (previously known as Librophile) is another free audiobook directory that makes is easy to find public domain audio book downloads.

Browse by the  or  audio books to find one you might like, or look through the list of genres or authors. You can also see .

You can download the whole audio book or listen to it in pieces right on the website.

There are over 100,000 items at Digitalbook.io, and while some are audio books others are regular ebooks.

Light Up Your Brain has several free audio books that are just for kids, and you can stream them or download the audio books to your computer.

A transcription of the story is provided as well so that beginning readers can read along with the audio.

There are also some here that are all made to challenge their mind and keep their brain active.

ThoughtAudio has classic works of literature and philosophy books available for download as free audio books. You can  or search for books, as well as see them in order of those that were to the collection.

To get these audio books you have to either listen to them on the ThoughtAudio website or download them in installments by right-clicking each part that you want to save.

PDF transcripts for these audio books are also available for download.

This free audio book website specializes in classic and fiction audio books and you can view them by most popular, recently added, or by author's last name.

Some examples include Romeo and Juliet, The Wind in the Willows, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, and Autobiography of Mark Twain.

All the audio books here can be downloaded as an MP3 file and some of them as an M4B file for the iPhone/iPod.

There are over 10,000 free educational and video titles at Learn Out Loud, including not only 3,000+ free audio books but also lots of documentaries, speeches, and more.

The free audio books can be sorted by recently added, random, most popular, or alphabetically. There are also specific categories that you can choose to find only those types of free audio book downloads, such as Science, Technology, Self Development, Languages, Business, and Travel.

These free audio books can be streamed online or, if you sign up for a free account, downloaded by "purchasing" them like you would something that you have to pay for (but they're still free).

Audiobook Sync (SYNC) is a free summer reading program meant for kids 13 and older, but anyone can take part in it to get free audio book downloads.

SYNC gives away two free audio books every week over the summer. It's a perfect way for kids to keep their comprehension skills sharp before returning to school, but also provides a way for adults to grab some free audio ebooks.

The SYNC service is sponsored by , and the books themselves are usable through the app on mobile and desktop devices.

You can sign up for or alerts to get reminded when SYNC releases new titles.

Project Gutenberg has audio books that are and also some that are . These are public domain books that have been turned into audio books that are now available for free for anyone who's interested.

The easiest way to find an audio book here is to browse through the authors and titles. You can also view them by languages and by the time they were added — over the last 24 hours, the last 7 days, and the last 30 days.

Another place to look for free audio books at Project Gutenberg is the page.

ejunto is the place to be if you're wanting audio books on American history, philosophy, autobiographies, and similar topics. 

Although there's a sparse selection and you can't listen to these public domain audio books on the ejunto website, you can download them to your computer for free.

Some of the free audio ebooks here include a George Washington biography, Benjamin Franklin's autobiography, an audio recording of the US Constitution, and Second Treatise on Government by John Locke.

Scribl is a very different audio book website because while there are some free audio books, most of them come at a cost. It's really a hit or miss type of situation when you look for free audio ebooks here.

However, we've included it here because you might find unique books that aren't free anywhere else. Just make sure to grab them quickly because as books get more popular, Scribl .

Because Scribl has other things, too, like ebooks and podcasts, you want to make sure to filter the results to .

Free audio books at ? Yes! With a catch: it's only free to download the books if you're a paying user. allow for downloading content while free users can only stream the books.

The free audio books at Spotify are not organized very well because Spotify is a , not an audio book website — but there is a good handful of them available.
