If you get paid weekly, there are several times a year that  in a month instead of the usual four. The 52 weeks in a year don't get parceled out evenly between the different months.

Since many regular expenses are due monthly, you'll likely end up with a few more Benjamins in your wallet in these months. Make a note of when those five-paycheck months will occur; then start planning how you'll use those extra checks to improve your finances.

Using the Extra Paychecks

You might want to just bank that full extra paycheck into a savings account or add to your investments. If you do that each month that you get an extra check, you'll have added a full month's net pay to your nest egg, and you won't have shorted yourself on your monthly cash flow for regular expenses.

Or you could use that extra money to pay down credit card debt—if you have some of that—or make an extra payment on your mortgage, which would go entirely toward the principal, increasing your equity. This is actually another form of saving the money since that equity comes back to you when you sell the house.

These extra checks might feel like windfalls, and you could earmark them for all the fun you want in your life but really can't comfortably pay for out of your regular four checks per month. Set up a "fun" savings account that's all for play—vacations, expensive dinners out, and pricey live entertainment.

If You Are Paid Weekly

If you are paid weekly, each of the years from 2018 through 2025 has at least four months containing five weeks. That means you'll get a total of 33 extra paychecks (including one year, 2021, with five five-week months) between 2018 and 2025. That's a lot of extra cash to use for fun, to pay down debt, or to use of in the ways described previously. The following list shows which months have five weeks during those years:

  • 2018: March, June, August, November
  • 2019: March, May, August, November
  • 2020: January, May, July, October
  • 2021: January, April, July, October, December
  • 2022: April, July, September, December
  • 2023: March, June, September, December
  • 2024: March, May, August, November
  • 2025: January, May, August, November

If You Are Paid Every Two Weeks

If you get paid every two weeks, you will also see months where you will get three paychecks instead of two. This will only occur if your payday falls on the first Friday of a month with five Fridays. However, if your payday falls on the second Friday of those months, you will only get the usual two paychecks. Check the five-Friday months to see when your payday will fall.

Consider the Season

What expenses can you expect in these months that are not in your ? They might include holiday spending, birthdays, taxes, school expenses, or recurring home and car maintenance. An extra paycheck might show up just in time to keep your cash flow in positive territory.
