Earning Points & Rewards

American Express has two Blue Cash cards and a Cash Magnet card. This Blue Cash version has no annual fee but less generous rewards than the Blue Cash Preferred Card, which has a $95 annual fee.

There are several key differences between this card and Blue Cash Preferred. You earn 3% at supermarkets (excluding superstores and warehouse clubs and only up to $6,000 per year), 2% at gas stations and some department stores, and 1% on all other purchases, compared to 6%-3%-1%, respectively, on the Preferred card. The initial spending bonus is $150 on this card, while the Preferred rewards $250 with the same spending requirements.

Redeeming Rewards

As soon as you earn $25 in rewards, you can redeem them for statement credits. Points can also be used for certain travel and gift card purchases.

You must have a minimum rewards balance of $25 to redeem points for cash back, given in the form of an account credit, which cannot be applied to the minimum monthly payment.

Returned Payment Fee Up to $38
Cash Advance APR 27.49%

Is This Card Right For You?

The Preferred version is clearly the better of the two Blue Cash cards, at least for the first year, considering the $250 bonus you can earn. After that, it really depends on your spending habits and your willingness to pay an annual fee. You certainly can earn a lot more with the Preferred card than with this one, though whether that is worth the $95 annual fee varies for everyone.
