The largest in the U.S., has a presence in more than 60 markets in the U.S., Europe, Canada, Asia, and South America. Over the past 20-plus years, CareerBuilder has powered the career sites for over 1,000 companies and online portals such as MSN and AOL.

More than 25 million job seekers use the site every month to find new jobs, get career advice, and explore careers. If you’re about to join them, you might be wondering how best to use the site’s resources to help you find a job. Here’s how to find what you need.

Search Options

You can by city, state, ZIP code, job title, skills, or military occupational code, as well as browse by job title, job category, or state.

The allows you to narrow down your search by location, industry, job category, colleges degrees, salary range, full- or part-time employment, and the date the job was listed.

You can also exclude certain , , and companies that don’t interest you, as well as selecting options that exclude national/regional jobs, non-traditional jobs, or those that don’t have a salary posted. (Note: if you select this option, you can expect to see far fewer job listings. For better or for worse, most U.S. employers haven’t jumped on board the trend of listing salary ranges in their job advertisements.)  

CareerBuilder also lets you create so that jobs that meet your criteria can be emailed to you as soon as they are posted. The site is also programmed to use the criteria you enter to recommend jobs you might otherwise overlook.

You can also upload your resume, and the site will show you job listings that match your experience. CareerBuilder lets you save jobs, resumes, and in your private account and offers educational information such as how to protect yourself from online fraud scams.

How to Post Your Resume

CareerBuilder will from a file, Dropbox, Google Drive, and any .DOC; dot.DOCX; PDF; RDF; TXT; ODT, or WPS up to 1000kb. They do not accept images or scanned documents.

You can post up to three different resumes and cover letters, and apply directly for jobs online. You also have the option to select career fields so employers can contact you directly.

You can also decide who can and cannot view your resume. Through your private account, you’ll be able to see when your applications are viewed and how you stack up against the competition.

Career Advice and Explore

In addition to its better-known job searching and resume posting capabilities, CareerBuilder offers insights for job seekers. The Career Advice and Explore tabs (third and fourth from the left in the top navigation bar on the homepage) allow users to drill down into potential job changes and career moves.

The Career Advice section offers breaking news on employers who are hiring now, hot jobs and occupations to consider, and tips on job searching and career development.  

The Explore tab is divided into two sections: Explore Industries and on the Rise. Explore Industries allows users to learn more about various job titles within each sector, including salary ranges, top pay by location, insider tips, related job searches, and recent job postings. on the Rise shows job titles with a strong and growing occupational outlook. Click into each job profile and learn more about job duties, educational requirements, salary ranges, and current opportunities.

Part-Time Jobs

Whether you’re a student or a stay-at-home parent or just someone who doesn’t want to work full-time, CareerBuilder can help you find part-time, contract, and seasonal jobs.

If you’re not picky, you can use the keyword “part-time” and specify location by city, state or ZIP, and see every part-time job in your area. But you can expect a wide range of options to appear, from dockworker to EMT to office temp – many of which you won’t be qualified for.

A better option for most users is . Narrow your query by type of employment, and select the schedule you’re looking for: full-time, contractor, part-time, intern, or seasonal/temp. You can also specify other options like location, industry, job category, required degree, and salary range, as well as using any keywords that apply.
