Are you interested in a career as a biomedical career? Biomedical engineers design and build solutions to problems that exist in biology and medicine. Their goal is to improve the quality and effectiveness of patient care. They design equipment, explore new procedures, and use software to simulate new test drugs. 

Biomedical engineers must be able to analyze complex medical and technical documents, and have strong communication and technical writing skills.  

A Bachelor’s Degree in biomedical engineering is required for employment. Additional education, coursework, and research experience are a plus, and often required for advanced employment or teaching. 

Biomedical Engineer Job Description 

Biomedical Engineers create and maintain the tools for medical professionals to provide advanced care to their patients. They design equipment to help surgeons to operate on patients more effectively and less intrusively. Biomedical Engineers design and modify devices such as artificial limbs, organs and other body parts for patients. They create software to enable medical delivery systems to function more effectively.

Biomedical Engineers repair and modify existing equipment, train health care professionals regarding the appropriate use of equipment and evaluate the safety issues related to equipment use. Biomedical Engineers are often involved with research projects to find new solutions to medical problems. They work in hospitals, for colleges, for medical products manufacturers and biotechnology companies.

Specializations within the Field

According to the Biomedical Engineering Society, biomedical engineers can focus on the following different areas during their career: 

Biomedical Electronics, Bioinstrumentation, Biomaterials, Biomechanics, Bionics, Cellular Tissue and Genetic Engineering, Clinical Engineering, Medical Imaging, Orthopaedic Bioengineering, Rehabilitation Engineering, Systems Physiology, Bionanotechnology, and Neural Engineering.


Biomedical engineers complete a bachelor's degree with extensive coursework in physics, advanced mathematics, biological science, chemistry and engineering.  They complete hands on engineering projects in laboratory classes and during internships.  Many engineers go on for graduate coursework in the discipline to further develop their knowledge and skills.

Biomedical Engineer Salaries

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Biomedical Engineers earned an average of $85,610 in 2016. The bottom 10% of Biomedical Engineers earned less than $51,050 while the top 10% earned at least $134,620.
